Motorists
Made up of childhood friends and longtime collaborators, Motorists bring rough-edged punk excitability and the wistful jangle of '80s college rock to their melodic and infectiously energetic sound. Intricate, layered guitar leads, tight, snappy rhythms, and hints of Krautrock repetition and post-punk frustration make up the band's 2021 debut full-length, Surrounded, and their second album, 2024's Touched by the Stuff, leans more into power pop and '90s alternative rock.
Motorists were formed in 2018 in Toronto by Craig Fahner, Matt Learoyd, and Jesse Locke. The three musicians had been friends since their teenage years when they all lived in Calgary and had worked together on various projects in the time leading up to the formation of Motorists. The band released a few songs in 2019 and issued the From the Wreckage cassette in 2020 while working toward a full-length LP. That album, Surrounded, materialized in 2021. Locke left the band sometime after the release of the record, and Nick MicKinlay took over on drums. The refurbished Motorists worked on their next album in fits and starts, writing the majority of the material in 2022 but then adding new songs right before it was quickly recorded. The influence of power pop was more prevalent on the new tracks, as were elements of the more radio-friendly sector of '90s alternative rock. The album, titled Touched by the Stuff, was released in May 2024.
