Avant-garde composer Lee Hyla's composition for voice, piano, and ivory-billed woodpecker tells the true story of Alexander Wilson's early-19th-century encounter with the rare species, while he was traveling in the South painting and chronicling wild birds in their natural habitat. The duet between the piano and the (prerecorded) woodpecker is particularly fascinating, and the recounting of the creature's ultimate demise is unexpectedly poignant.
