The summer of 2022 is shaping up to be very hot for Roche Musique. After Darius’ album, Oasis (which draws inspiration from Marvin Gaye) back in April, the French label is releasing FKJ’s emotive second album, just five years after his first album French Kiwi Juice. After settling in the Philippines after the pandemic, the Franco-New Zealand musician explains that he has returned to instrumental sobriety, “with a rather slow BPM and the same mood from A to Z.” The first thing that strikes you about this album is its smooth consistency and coherence. It completely submerges you into a groove atmosphere from start to finish. It’s as if the 14 tracks have been cut from the same cloth.

Whichever vibe it goes for, be it jazzy (Way Out), Hollywood-esque (Us), laid back (New Life) or explicitly erotic (IHM), V I N C EN T is a classy album that’s always sincere. Also the guest artists slot in perfectly, whether that be on the contemplative Can’t Stop (Little Dragon), the intoxicating A Moment of Mystery (Toro y Moi), the incredible single Greener featuring Santana, or the earthy track Brass Necklace featuring June Marieezy (alias ((( O ))) ). FKJ explains: “My music here is much more contemplative. There are only deserted beaches and virgin forests. I compose the soundtrack based on what surrounds me. I’ve found pure euphoria, the joy of exploration.” A great listen from beginning to end. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Tango: Sounds of the Río de la Plata

Rooted in dance and eventually becoming its very own artistic movement, the history of tango is an epic one; and its future truly looks limitless. A musical genre with hybrid origins, it remains one of the most incredible creations to come out of Río de la Plata. “It’s the only thing we don’t ask Europe for its opinion on,” wrote Argentina’s Macedonio Fernández, the man that young Jorge Luis Borges admired “to the point of devout and passionate plagiarism.” A number of coincidences in the late 19th century gave rise to this style of music. As musicologist Carlos Vega said: "no one really tried to create tango." And yet, here it is; complete with its own traditions and innovations, as well as its own golden age, ill-fated artists, myths and rituals.

The Dark Side of the Moon: An Astronomical Success

Pink Floyd's ground-breaking album The Dark Side of the Moon was the result of a long creative process that began around 1968. A Saucerful of Secrets (the main track from the eponymous album) was, for Nick Mason at least, where it all began. Their next album Ummagumma (1969) gave each band member the opportunity to create a solo piece, though they would have to combine their talents if they wanted to hit the jackpot. Pink Floyd continued to search for the perfect record with Meddle, an album which highlighted their skills in the studio, and Atom Heart Mother, before they reached nirvana with The Dark Side of the Moon. And the album’s perfection hasn’t faded one bit.

Neoclassicism: The New World Between Classical Music and Electro

Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Poppy Ackroyd, Peter Broderick, Joana Gama... In recent years, these popular names have all been grouped under the vast and imprecise label "neoclassical". In truth, this "scene" looks more like a motley crew of curious artists who mix classical instruments with electronic production. Drawing influence from American minimalism, these musicians tantalise the senses and expand horizons on both sides of the musical spectrum.
