A band that's sly enough to give itself a name that puns on a Sonic Youth side project and that developed its ensemble chops by drastically reorchestrating music from vintage cowboy films is one that should perhaps be approached with caution, but that should definitely be approached one way or another. Morricone Youth's first full-length album consists of all original material, but the music is deeply informed by the tunes and styles that they absorbed as they were learning to play together: an enormous amount of care obviously went into the arrangements, and the melodies themselves often sound like a weird combination of Italian and cabaret influences, as if The Threepenny Opera had been revised as a spaghetti Western. The title track is especially spaghetti-ish, but "Starshine" blends a soul/R&B sound with the twangy retro-kitsch guitars; "Drink" sounds torchy and dissolute, while "Heist" involves spooky vocals and "Funny Thing" starts out lurching along in 7/8 time before lapsing into a queasy waltz. It's all very interesting, and occasionally it's kind of fun, but whether you'll actually want to listen to it over and over again is a separate question.
