Few albums could be more in tune with their labels than this one is. You can't talk about Brownswood Recordings without talking about Gilles Peterson. And you can't talk about Gilles Peterson without mentioning soul, funk, disco, acid jazz and all-round groove. They're all there, at the heart of Secret Night Gang, the eponymous debut album from a young Manchester band who know their 70's and 80's classics inside out. The Mancunians' catalogue is stuffed with old vinyls of Stevie Wonder, Chic, Shakatak, Bill Withers, Beggar & Co, Earth, Wind and Fire and Tower Of Power. And all of these five-star influences have been impeccably digested and nourish the nine tracks on this endearing and unpretentious record. Between 80's britfunk and 90's street soul, this gang formed by singer Kemani Anderson, saxophonist Callum Connell and bassist Stuart Whitehead plays around with all the components of groove, whether disco, soul, jazz-funk or acid jazz.
