“Problem was I never was a prodigy/Possibly, my biggest flaw was lack of modesty.” On Little Havana, the first track on Richer Than I’ve Ever Been, Rick Ross sums up his career perfectly in just two sentences. This eleventh album, despite its title, is certainly a little less money-orientated that its predecessor, Port of Miami 2. Well maybe just a little. Because despite the enjoyment and the desire to try out new types of instrumentals, a leopard never changes its spots. The Miami rapper has excellent support this time, in particular with Timbaland, who delivers some incredible production on The Pulitzer - A lightning no-frills track of crazy heaviness with no chorus. It's hard to keep twelve tracks like that. So the megalomaniac king invites the great Jazmine Sullivan and 21 Savage on Outlawz, and even ends on a light note by inviting Wiz Khalifa on the more dispensable Hella Smoke. Allowing himself to do what he wants, he even attempts something new on the track Warm Words In A Cold World, with its completely convoluted instrumentals composed by Bink! No matter what he does, his voice pierces the productions, his fake slow flow is constantly like a bulldozer with no brakes. And that's why we love Rick Ross. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
