What the KammerChor Saarbrücken and director Georg Grün do here is both new and old. Most of the pieces on this album of choral arrangements of Richard Strauss songs are by Clytus Gottwald, a veteran arranger who died at 97 in 2023. His work was inspired in part by earlier experiments in the use of a cappella choirs in contemporary music settings, and he does not simply deploy the Strauss melody lines on top and reproduce as much as possible of the orchestral texture in the rest of the choir. Instead, his arrangements integrate the parts together, becoming more investigations into Straussian counterpoint than a simple part-song version. Yet they do not lose the part-song layer of German tradition. The closest anyone has come to these are the big choral arrangements of symphonic music done by the choir Accentus, but here everything happens in small dimensions, and the music is quite absorbing. Best of all are the titular Letzte Lieder (the "Four Last Songs"), where a solo violin is added; the violin's role is complex as it both picks up the solo violin parts in Strauss' original orchestration and participates in the deeper polyphony. The KammerChor Saarbrücken is one of the extraordinary regional choirs that testify to the depth of German musical life, and director Grün is in perfect control of the often complex polyphony here, with up to 16 separate lines. This is not for listeners wanting a simplification of Strauss' songs, but all others will find it an intriguing item.
