Chicago's G Herbo evolved from solid mixtapes to being a superstar of the rap subgenre drill. Herbo's intense lyrics of personal trauma and struggles fit perfectly within drill's foreboding instrumental framework, and his fourth studio album, PTSD, finds the rapper moving into his most polished material without losing any energy. Much of the lyrical content was inspired by therapy sessions Herbo underwent trying to process traumatic experiences from early life, and themes of societal injustices, addiction, painful upbringings, and losing friends run throughout the album. This is evident from the nonstop rush of "Intro," the auto-tuned hooks and mournful instrumental of "Gangstas Cry," and the autobiographical look back on a difficult childhood on "Feelings." The album's title track is its catchiest moment and also one of its darkest. Aided by Lil Uzi Vert, Chance the Rapper, and Juice WRLD, Herbo delivers lyrics of mental health issues, paranoia, and anger in the form of a mesmerizing melodic hook. The bubbly drums and eerie guitar loop are a perfect backdrop for verses of disconnection and dread. Various other guest stars drop by throughout the album, with 21 Savage, Lil Durk, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, and others contributing to the stylistically varied songs. PTSD continues G Herbo's progression from the rawness of his earliest material into more refined production and a clearer view of his volatile life experiences.
