Pianist Piers Lane had a good deal of success in 2013 with an album of encores entitled Piers Lane Goes to Town. That release featured small 20th century gems, but in 2023, he returned with this second volume that is somewhat different in emphasis. It is still a collection of short pieces that Lane has played at encores, and it has a similarly inventive light sprinkling of pop pieces. Here, the very famous Black and White Rag is included, as is British composer Billy Mayerl's ragtime-flavored Railroad Rhythm. However, the time frame is broadened beyond the 20th century to reach back to the Baroque composer Jean-Baptiste Loeillet, and there is a new emphasis on dance music from the Baroque to the present. German dances by Schubert lay down a spine, and Lane plays off of these with considerable wit. As he did on the first volume, Lane finds works with that elusive encore quality of making the listener ask, "what the heck was that?" This is a delightful release from Lane once again, light in spirit yet altogether original.
