In 1634, an important collection of folk stories and legends appeared in Naples: the Pentamerone or Lo cunto de li cunti (meaning “The Tale of Tales”), collected by Giambattista Basile. For the very first time in history, these myths, sayings, legends and narratives (which until then had only been transmitted orally) were recorded on paper. The publisher was no doubt addressing an informed public - one that could grasp the moral and ethical principles, the ambiguities and metaphors that were hidden in what might appear as simple entertainment. The book is composed of fifty fairy tales that are recounted by ten different storytellers over the course of five days in Neapolitan dialect - hence the name “Pentamerone”, meaning “five days”. Many of these tales would resurface much later, with the likes of Perrault and Grimm, who wrote the preface to the first German translation of the “Pentamerone” two centuries later... Of course, the collection doesn’t include a single musical note – they’re fairy tales after all. The Oni Wytars Ensemble have set about gathering popular songs from that period or earlier, as well as villanelles, tarantellas and canzones by well-known composers such as Baldassare Donato or Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger. They stick to the inherent rhythms of prosody and the result is all the more convincing as everything seems to have come straight from the depths of time, with their lively voices and mischievous instrumentations. A wonderful record. © SM/Qobuz
