The University of South Dakota Chamber Singers punch well above their weight for a regional choir from a small institution and have released several well-executed thematic albums. This 2024 release on the Navona Records label is perhaps the most unusual of the group, coming in physical versions with a note by director David Holdhusen that alludes to "the overwhelming challenges of the last several years." The album even opens with an intriguing setting of the Dies Irae chant by Michael John Trotta, elaborating that medieval melody into contemporary choral polyphony. The most striking feature of the album is that almost half the works are African American spirituals, and there is one more, I'll Fly Away, from the realm of white hymnody. The spirituals are arranged by Moses Hogan and other well-known figures. The choir does have African American members, but it is still a bit surprising to hear these in such numbers, and the listener is left with the feeling that they were chosen in response to the external circumstances Holdhusen's note describes. The rest of the program is characteristically American as well, even Franz Biebl's Ave Maria from Germany, which did not become popular until American choirs adopted it. There is only one piece, a Palestrina motet, from traditional classical repertories. The Chamber Singers are in fine form, with strong soloists in some of the pieces, but it is the program that is the real draw here; it is unique and quite persuasive.
