O Passo do Lui was the 1984 follow-up to Paralamas do Sucesso' debut Cinema Mudo -- an album which sold reasonably well and lent the group two minor hits, "Cinema Mudo" and "Vital e Sua Moto." Passo do Lui, however, became the band's big breakthrough and the their ticket to a place in the spotlight. "Óculos," "Meu Erro," "Ska," and "Romance Ideal" all played very frequently by Brazilian radio stations. Compared to Cinema Mudo, O Passo do Lui tilt more towards pop and ska as opposed to the (new wave) rock sound of Paralamas' first release. The touches of MPB and traditional Brazilian rhythms that Paralamas would add on subsequent albums are not yet present here, so the sound is much more basic but no less enjoyable Brazilian new wave pop, which was so typical for the first half of the '80s.
