Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus is often thought of as a massive, contemplative work, made up of reflections on the birth of Jesus. Peter Serkin, however, plays it as if it is a collection of visions, and not necessarily mystical visions at that. He is extroverted, rather than introverted. The "Regard de la Vierge" is conversational, "Par Lui tout a été fait" is wildly energetic and dazzling, while the joy in "Regard de l'Esprit de joie" is clearly evident. Even the two most contemplative tracks here, "Le baiser de l'Enfant-Jésus" and "Je dors, mais mon coeur veille," are colorful, descriptive paintings rather than moody tone poems. The clear sound adds to the brightness of the performance. While Serkin's youthfulness (he was 25 at the time of the recording) may have something to do with the tendency toward animation rather than reflection in Vingt Regards, it still is a wonderous piece of music, marvelously brought to life by Serkin.
