Vocalist Maxine Sullivan, who had a hit with "Loch Lomond," recorded some other popular numbers in the late '30s and worked with John Kirby's Orchestra, making 18 obscure recordings during 1944-48 for the Bacon/Davis, International and Apollo labels. Sixteen selections (all but two songs that were included on an earlier Onyx album) are on this attractive collector's LP. The straightforward singer is heard backed by a quintet plus strings led by bassist Cedric Wallace, "The New Friends of Rhythm" (a different string group), Larry Johnson's Orchestra and, best of all, swinging on six numbers with pianist Ellis Larkins' trio. Despite the lack of sales at the time, Sullivan is heard in prime form throughout such numbers as "Skylark," "Legalize My Name," "Restless" and remakes of "If I Had a Ribbon Bow" and "Loch Lomond." Even with the high quality of these enjoyable recordings, Maxine Sullivan (who would find her sophisticated swing approach to be a bit out of fashion) would not record (other than two numbers in 1953) again until 1955.
