This massive South African gospel ensemble springs from the same troubled, but culturally rich, Johannesburg neighborhood that has been the starting point for acclaimed acts like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Chiskop, and a host of others. Known for their performances of hymns derived from Zulu, Afrikaans, and English gospel traditions, the Soweto Gospel Choir are also skilled interpreters of Western popular music, and have attracted international audiences with their covers of songs by U2, Bob Marley, and Bob Dylan. LIVE AT THE NELSON MANDELA THEATER captures the group performing in Johannesburg in the spring of 2008.
