Seth Farber is a talented pianist whose style encompasses blues, boogie-woogie, stride and ragtime. His powerful playing recalls Ray Bryant a bit and is both soulful and hard-swinging. On his debut CD, Farber performs a 13-song solo recital comprised of ten originals, a folk song, "St. James Infirmary" and Artie Matthews' "Pastime Rag." His relaxed playing is quite accessible yet he obviously has plenty of technique. The accent is on blues and rags but there are also a few hotter pieces for variety. I do wish that for his compositions Farber had picked titles other than "After Hours" and "After You've Gone" since those names are already taken. Overall this is an impressive outing, easily recommended to fans of both blues and classic jazz.
