Joseph Haydn, who is credited as being the "father" of both the modern symphony and string quartet, did not begin laying the formal groundwork for the former until 1781 with the completion of Op. 33. Here already, the still-to-come final maturity in instrument independence and texture is already well on its way. This Praga Digitals album features numbers the first, fourth, and sixth from this opus, as well as lone quartet of Op. 42. Performing these significant quartets is the Párkányi Quartet, which began as the Orlando String Quartet. The Párkányi has produced several successful albums recording the works of 20th century composers such as Bartók, Debussy, and Ravel. The performance of Haydn, however, is hard to pin down. The opening three movements of the Op. 33/1 quartet, for example, are surprisingly safe sounding and played with an air of unnecessary delicacy and timidity, not at all what one would hope for or expect. By the fourth movement, the Párkányi completely changes gears and brings an exciting, rhythmically driven conclusion to the quartet. This vacillation between riveting and blasé permeates the album, leaving listeners searching to define the exact character that Párkányi was hoping to achieve. Praga's DSD, SACD sound is incredibly vivid and spacious.
