After a few years in Los Angeles, Miles Kane has returned to London as well as to classic tunes with Change The Show. A change in direction and a return to the Northern soul of the 60s, as he is already essentially doing on The Last Shadow Puppets' releases with his sidekick Alex Turner or with his supergroup The Jaded Hearts Club (Matt Bellamy from Muse, Graham Coxon from Blur, Nic Cester from Jet, guitarist Jamie Davis and drummer Sean Payne from the Zutons) which, since 2017, has been reviving outdated soul and rock'n'roll standards for private concerts or in the studio (You've Always Been Here), under fire from more than a few critics. “I tried setting things a little bit harder, a little bit rockier, but the thing I kept coming back round to was trying to make a modern northern soul album, basically.” Kane fell into Motown as a child, thanks to parents who were fans of Diana Ross and the Temptations, and here he fulfils his dearest wish: an entire Motown-style album.

It was under the influence of his neighbours Sunglasses For Jaws, a psychedelic duo from Bethnal Green in East London, that the album was (re)born in the studio. They created the frenetic Tell Me What You’re Feeling together, then Kane decided to re-record the rest of the album along with them. In three weeks, the whole thing was wrapped up. The result: dreamy piano ballads (Coming Of Age), a soulful duet with Corinne Bailey Rae (Nothing's Ever Gonna Be Good Enough), or the excellent Don't Let It Get You Down, a track worthy of a James Bond movie with lots of resonance and very kinetic melodies, introduced by Paul O'Grady’s alias Lily Savage, all enhanced by the backing vocals of Holly Quin-Ankrah. A mature album on its way to becoming his best. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
