It’s immediately apparent that this is NOT a rap album. It begs the question if Kevin Abstract can even be categorized as a rapper, given how his artistic nuances and intentions seem to blend into different references and explorations. The founder of the Texan group Brockhampton has become a leading figure over the years, and releases his fourth solo album, Blanket, with a definitive thud. By centering the work around guitar with a sort of teenage sound, Abstract lets himself get carried away with a need for nostalgic melodies and westcoast angst. Blanket is deeply rooted in the Californian post-punk aesthetic of the 2000s with flavours of the old grunge scene. Abstract summons the musical ghosts of his youth – now nearly thirty-years-old, and nurtured by the rock scene. His vocal stylings swing between whispers and screams, all while being accompanied by his Brockhampton comrade Romil Hemnani, a faithful co-producer. The result is a curious mix of Nirvana and a love-struck Blink-182. Blanket belongs to the genre of distorted albums delivered by rap artists born in the 1990s and 2000s, and promises to stay relevant for the years to come.
