On his first recording for Lost Highway, Austin's Black Joe Lewis does for the blues roughly what Jon Spencer did in the '90s, pumping it up with a punky, irreverent edge and a touch of garage rock. Lewis hews closer to his blues inspirations--even the album cover is an homage to a classic Lightnin' Hopkins record--but for all his grit and rawness, he's ultimately a blues postmodernist.
