It may not be new in the strictest sense of the word, as these two concertos were recorded by Jarrett in 1984 and 1985. At the time, Barber's concerto – written in 1962 – was still considered a very contemporary work. Barber followed neither the route of the avant-garde nor that of serialism, but borrowed the language of both: in the concerto’s first movement Barber uses the melismatic shapes and numerous modifications of serialism – inversion, retrograde, mirror etc. – whilst retaining a distinct tonal centre. However it is in the Bartókien third movement where the devilish jazz really allows Jarrett to shine. He is equally dazzling in Bartók’s Piano Concerto No.3, considered to be the composer’s masterpiece despite his tragic death preventing him from finishing the final seventeen bars. Written during his American period, some have picked out certain phrases borrowed from popular music in the States – yet phrases which he has certainly translated into his own musical language. Jarrett handles the music with delicacy and a bluesy touch which never threatens to “jazzify” the work. The album closes with a short improvisation by Jarrett. © SM, Qobuz 2015
