Well-known by mandolin enthusiasts for his spectacular studio recordings on Deutsche Grammophon, Avi Avital is even more terrific in recital, the one featured on this album having been recorded at the 2015 Verbier Festival. Born in Israel, the mandolin player is known the world over thanks to the great expressive intensity of his playing; his repertoire combining baroque pieces with traditional works. His recitals are highly anticipated wherever he goes, from Carnegie Hall in New York, to Wigmore Hall in London or the Berlin Philharmonie. It all starts with “Nigun,” one of Genevan composer Ernest Bloch’s most famous pieces, arranged by Avital, which precedes Bach’s “Partita for Violin N° 2,” and finishing with the immensely awe-inspiring “Chaconne.” Not much is known about Filippo Sauli, except that he was a mandolinist highly sought after by the court of Vienna’s Habsburg dynasty at the very beginning of the 18th century. His “Six Partitas” are one of the first examples of serious works composed for the mandolin. The rest of the program is dedicated to Avi Avital’s own pieces, and “Improvised Poem” by Japanese mandolinist and composer Yasuo Kuwahara (1946-2003), who was also known for his exceptional technical skills. © François Hudry/Qobuz
