Toto fue formado en Los Ángeles en 1978 por David Paich, Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro, David Hungate y Jeff Porcaro. Paich era el hijo del arreglista Marty Paich y los Porcaro eran los hijos del percusionista Joe Porcaro. Los miembros de la banda se conocieron en la escuela secundaria y en sesiones de estudio en los 70, y se convirtieron en unos de los músicos de estudio más ocupados del negocio musical.
