About Playlist
Big blonde hair, velvety mezzo-soprano voice, glamorous evening dresses: the British singer Dusty Springfield quickly became an icon of white soul music in the 1960s. In 1958, at the age of 19, Mary Isobel O'Brien joined her first group, the all-female trio The Lana Sisters. Two years later, she and her brother formed a new pop-folk group, The Springfields, in which she became Dusty Springfield, a reference to her childhood nickname for her battles in the dust with the boys. The band enjoyed considerable success in the UK with songs like ‘Island of Dreams’ and ‘Say I Won't Be There’. But it was Dusty's solo career that took her music all the way to the United States. Her first pop single ‘I Only Want to Be with You’ reached number four in the UK charts and became the first of many transatlantic hits in the 1960s. These productive years made a significant contribution to the blue-eyed soul genre, as well as to pop, country and jazz. In 1968, Dusty reached the peak of her career and, wanting to be taken seriously as a soul artist with a passion for the genre, she moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where she recorded Dusty in Memphis for the legendary Atlantic Records label. The album includes her biggest hit ‘Son of a Preacher Man’. In her 40-year career, Dusty Springfield has had 6 singles in the US Billboard Hot 100 Top 20 and 16 in the UK Singles Chart. Few British female artists (particularly in the 60s) have achieved such a feat. Photo © David Redfern Redferns
