After nine blissful years together, the members of New York trio Sunflower Bean went their separate ways in 2022, each facing different personal challenges: guitarist Nick Kivlen moved to California, bassist and singer Julia Cumming went through a break up, and drummer Olive Faber took on an all-new project (Stars Revenge). However, it only took one song to bring them back together again. Originating from this period, but cast aside amidst so much uncertainty, “There’s a Part I Can’t Get Back” was successfully salvaged, becoming the catalyst for this fourth album. To avoid falling back into a potentially lethal routine, the group has devised a strategy: from the grunge guitars on “Champagne Taste” up until the folksy “Please Rewind,” Sunflower Bean goes in full circles throughout the entire album, radically switching from one musical genre to another. We’re particularly fond of the 60s feel of “Waiting for the Rain,” the sauntering folk of “I Knew Love,” and even the gimmicky piano arpeggios on the rock track “Nothing Romantic.” Obviously, Julia’s singing is one of the record’s greatest assets, her voice showcased particularly well on “Look What You’ve Done to Me.” Love, friendship, and solitude are the topics du jour on this eclectic album, beautifully mixed by Caesar Edmunds (The Killers, Wet Leg). © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
