Oscar Peterson was recognised as a keyboard virtuoso very early on. He manages to achieve a ‘happy synthesis’ between the great masters of jazz piano (Art Tatum, James P. Johnson, Teddy Wilson and Nat King Cole) and contemporary musicians such as Errol Garner and Bud Powell. At the turn of the ‘revolutionary’ 70s, Oscar Peterson could have been considered old news by piano lovers who had grown accustomed to the freedom expressed by the trios of Bill Evans or Paul Bley, as well as new young musicians such as Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea. Even if time itself hadn’t been enough to blur the artificial quarrels between the old school and the contemporary and make Oscar Peterson’s music a favourite amongst music lovers of all generations, this exceptional Zurich concert would have put everyone in agreement on the pianist’s genius.

Here, Peterson is at the head of a formidable trio, comprised of his old friend Louis Hayes on drums and the great Danish double-bassist Niels-Henning-Orsted Pedersen, both of whom are on top form. The three musicians are deliciously digressive in their dialogue and counterpoints. Oscar Peterson plays with his signature irresistible and elegant style, producing airy melodies drawn from the vast repertoire of songbooks and other classics. Harnessing a classic aesthetic of clarity and balance, Peterson and his companions create music that’s constantly lyrical, light and effortless. It also possesses a hallucinating intensity, virtuosity and spontaneity. As if by magic, Peterson and his fellow musicians have unveiled the very essence of jazz. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
