About Playlist
Formed in the latter part of the 1990s' riot grrrl scene in the Northwest United States—and named for a street in the suburbs of Olympia, Washington—Sleater-Kinney has outlasted their peers by continuing to evolve. Though their lyrics' feminist progressive perspective hasn't changed, their sound has gone from garage-punk to a huge rock sound that has, at times, cheekily co-opted classic rock, post-punk, dance floor, electronica and whatever the inside of a tornado sounds like. Co-founders, co-guitarists and co-vocalists Corin Tucker (she of the gale-force voice) and Carrie Brownstein (whose guitar can convey actual emotion), along with a rotation of drummers—most notably Janet Weiss, who exponentially increased their power from 1996 to 2019, save for the band's hiatus of 2006 to 2014—specialize in conversational dialogue, be it through harmony, call-and-response or following parallel paths. This playlist explores the best of their 10 albums, along with Tucker's (Heavens to Betsy) and Brownstein's (Excuse 17) pre S-K bands and Wild Flag, Brownstein and Weiss' side project with Mary Timony and the Minders' Rebecca Cole.
