Let’s finish with an album that is worth putting into the Bragging Fine Singing Magazine. One might think that the title This is Me from the Swedish coloratura soprano Susanna Anderson is a self-deprecating wink: absolutely not! When you read the accompanying booklet, you understand that she thinks the sun shines out of her own ass, to say the least, and that she wants everyone to know… That being said, her remarkably agile voice—with a very tight and delicate vibrato that can bring to mind Lisa della Casa or Conchita Supervia (admittedly in another vocal range) and a perfect accuracy even in the most acute attacks—makes her rather unique. Here’s a small array of famous tunes for coloratura, among which greatest hits like the Magic Flute’s Queen of the Night’s Aria, the Bell Song from Lakme, Strauss’ Morgen with a solo violin on top of the orchestra, as well as less famous but still hyper virtuoso and vocalizing works from Vivaldi, and a few very interesting Swedish works from Albert Schnelzer. The album ends with a very musical little film score, a tune from Yentl composed by Michel Legrand. So here’s our tip: don’t read the incredibly smug booklet (unless it amuses you!), and simply listen to this surprising coloratura whose career now develops on the world’s greatest stages.
