From Australia, more precisely Melbourne, Josh, and Sam Teskey, around whom the group The Teskey Brothers was founded, immortalise the sound heritage of a sixties soul scene previously headed up by Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. On this third album, The Winding Day, both the parentage and homage are clear. The twisted and expressive guitars shine, almost blues-like, and are sublimated by a cheerful brass section in a devilishly controlled Southern American classic. There are few lavish artifices or stylistic effects, until, suddenly, great orchestral strings appear to bring to life the superb title Take My Heart. They also know how to break away from the usual formats, enabling the emotion to shine through even more. This can be heard in Blind Without You, a poignant ballad which contributes to making The Winding Day the best album that this young group has released to date. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
