With the various jazz, pop, and gospel adaptations of Handel's Messiah that circulate every holiday season, it is a bit surprising that jazz bandleader Duke Ellington's version of The Nutcracker, written with arranger Billy Strayhorn in 1960, isn't heard more often. It is short -- 17 and a half minutes on this EP -- and entirely listener-friendly. The work has rarely been recorded, and this outing by the Chineke! Orchestra is the first recording of an orchestral arrangement by Jeff Tyzik (the original is for a jazz big band). This new suite consists of five sections: the overture, "Toot Toot Tootie Toot" ("Dance of the Reed-Pipes"), "Dance of the Floreadores" ("Waltz of the Flowers"), "Sugar Rum Cherry" ("Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairies"), and "Peanut Brittle Brigade" (the March). Each section begins with Tchaikovsky's music and answers it in an antecedent in jazz rhythm, but beyond that, each solution to the thorny problem of merging jazz and classical music is distinctive, and the piece is enjoyable for anyone. This live performance has a few rough edges, but the young players of the multicultural Chineke! Orchestra play with verve and commitment. A good offbeat choice for the 2023 holiday season, this album made classical best-seller charts in the autumn of that year.
