Franz von Suppé's overtures are not so often heard on symphonic programs these days, and his theatrical works, at least outside Austria, are even rarer. Thus, this collection of instrumental works, mostly outside the theatrical sphere, might qualify as a genuine novelty; indeed, two of the works receive their world-recorded premieres here. One is the Fantasia Symphonica of 1859, whose title is accurate; it is not quite a symphony, but it does bear the mark of ambitious instrumental genres. There is even more obscure music, such as the Historisch-Additionelle Ausstellung des Carl-Theaters ("Historic-Additional Exhibition at the Carl-Theater"), as well as one well-known overture to start things off, that for the operetta Dichter und Bauer (1846). The whole thing is quite tuneful, and Suppé's knack for drawing on various traditions is interesting; he doesn't sound much like any of the Strauss family, and he often wraps things up with a Rossini-like turbo-finale. There is a lot of Viennese lore here, and one couldn't imagine a better group than the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Vienna to catch the music's shades. With reasonably idiomatic sound from Austria's Grafenegg Auditorium, this is an offbeat choice with strong appeal to lovers of Viennese operetta, of which there were enough to place the album on classical best-seller charts in early 2024.
