The Sommernachtskonzert ("Summer Night Concert") held by the Vienna Philharmonic at Schönbrunn Castle is generally a more thematic affair than the waltz-heavy New Year's show. The 2023 concert consists entirely of French music except for the traditional Strauss II Wiener Blut encore. The Philharmonic has done this before (those pleased by this release can get more of the same on the 2016 album, still in print), but there are several novel aspects here that do well in keeping the concerts fresh. Most prominent is the presence of conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who has been connected to the Philharmonic since 2010 but here makes his debut at the Sommernachtskonzert. May there be many more; Nézet-Séguin delivers the kind of crowd-pleasing fun that has endeared him to audiences in Philadelphia and elsewhere. Hear the snap in "Les Toreadors" and the other excerpts from Bizet's Carmen; sample especially his Ravel Boléro. The composer did not intend this work to represent sexual intercourse but instead imagined a performance with dancers in the open air, with a factory background (he was adamant that it sound mechanical, and Nézet-Séguin pretty much keeps to this). The open-air concert here, with, presumably, modern Vienna in the background, comes close enough, and the work takes its place as a summer night's reflection rather than having its usual connotation. Also unusual is the presence of the short orchestral piece D'un matin du printemps by Lili Boulanger, written not long before her tragic death at 24; it is an Impressionist tone poem that can stand with any by Debussy, and its introduction here will no doubt lead to new performances. There is more to enjoy in a release that pumps some new blood into this longstanding event, nicely recorded outdoors by Sony Classical.
