On the opening track of his third release, Pumpkinhead laments "At one time I had the underground in my hand." The Park Slope Brooklyn MC had a string of 12-inches in the late 1990s--in collaboration with groups Brooklyn Academy, O.B.S., and Natural Resource--and won the hearts of indie fans with his offbeat flow, imaginative lyricism, guttural voice, and pleas for hip-hop purity. Over beats by Marco Polo, Pumpkinhead does his best to bring it back, rekindling the East Coast underground's golden age with 14 tracks of heat and cameos from Jean Grae, Wordsworth, and D.V. Alias Khrist.
