Soul legende Al Green koppelen aan hiphop producers James Poyser en Amir “?uestlove” Thompson lijkt misschien een gewaagd vooruitzicht voor old-school fans, maar dit album klinkt als een terugkeer naar Greens klassieke jaren 70 sound zonder overdreven retro afhankelijk te klinken. Net als op zijn klassieke werken, vermengt Lay It Down alles van Southern soul, funk, jazz, blues en ballads tot een geweldig, smooth brouwsel. Het titelnummer, een duet met Anthony Hamilton, trapt af in stijl met een zweverige, door strijkers zoetgevooisde vibe. Andere hoogtepunten zijn de ballad “No One Like You,” en duetten met John Legend en Corinne Bailey Rae. Lay it Down is briljant in zijn gecontroloeerde passie en zijdezachte, atmosferische stemming. Een juweel van de latere soul dagen van een van de meesters van het genre.
