Paul McCartneys eerste studioalbum in vier jaar heet Kisses on the Bottom en is een verzameling van zangstandards, de eerste van zijn soort in McCartneys discografie. Als zoon van een jaren 20-bandleider, hoorde McCartney deze nummers ongetwijfeld in zijn jeugd. Dit album laat dan ook een speciale verwantschap tussen zanger en lied zien die ver voorbij gaat aan de songbookcollecties die anderen van zijn generatie getracht hebben te maken. Het album werd geproduceerd door jazz en zang-metgezel Tommy LiPuma. Op het album staan gastoptredens van grootheden als Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder en Diana Krall. Het openingsnummer (en de inspiratie voor de albumtitel) is Fats Wallers “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down (And Write Myself a Letter).”
