The tenth album from the Scots of Texas, Hi marks a return to tradition. The record's thirteen tracks revisit all the influences on which Sharleen Spiteri's iconic band built its success: from 60s soul, like the opener Mr Haze, or the touching Heaven Knows; to the country-inflected rock of Moonstar, by way of 80s pop pieces like Look What You’ve Done which is briefly reminiscent of A-ha's Take On Me (1985). It's clear that Spiteri is having great fun returning to the studio, to music and to her faithful fans. More surprisingly, the first single, the title track Hi, sees Texas play host to members of the Wu-Tang Clan: Method Man and RZA. This is actually a meeting of old friends: Texas and the rappers from Staten Island worked together in 1997 on the single Say What You Want – Texas' biggest commercial success to date. We are also treated to a version sung by Sharleen Spiteri alone. In the end, Hi is a beautifully crafted album, and it showcases the things that made this iconic 90s band so charming. This record revisits the inspiration that created the Texas style, without ever falling into nostalgia or formulaic covers. After 35 years, this act is still going strong. © Yan Céh/Qobuz
