Door samen te werken met Matt Serletic, een producer die naam maakte door zijn werk met Collective Soul en vooral Matchbox Twenty, komt Joe Cocker met Hard Knocks op de proppen met een glanzend schone machine. Ondanks Cockers kenmerkende soulvolle rasp, is dit geen bijzonder warm album. Het is fel en brutaal, zo hard en glanzend als roestvrij staal, maar er zit geen vuige rand aan: het is door en door professioneel, elke noot is opgepoetst tot hij glanst, er is geen enkel nummer wat niet voor Cocker gemaakt lijkt. Hij giet z’n passie er in, en ook al is dat misschien niet genoeg om wat leven in de brouwerij van deze deftige stropdas-soul te brengen, het is genoeg om het interessant te houden.
