Het titelloze derde album van Evanescence pakt de draad op die eindigde met het laatste album, The Open Door. Zangeres Amy Lee zingt over de dood, opgekropte frustratie, en gebrokenheid, tegen de achtergrond van de donkere gothic grooves van haar band. Evanescence vindt ook ruimte om te experimenteren met andere invloeden, zo werken ze drum loops en synthesizers in het anderzijds gitaarzware geluid. Alhoewel Steve Lillywhite in eerste instantie ingepland stond als producer, werd hij uiteindelijk vervangen door Nick Raskulinecz, die het dezelfde soort zware knarsigheid aan Evanescence meegeeft die hij ook gaf aan In Your Honor van Foo Fighters.
