Recorded between New York and Barcelona, Electric Tim isn’t just the work of Lee Ranaldo. The guitarist from Sonic Youth has worked closely here with producer and multi-instrumentalist Raül Refree Fernandez. With the help of his band called The Dust—composed of Sonic Youth’s drummer Steve Shelley, guitarist Alan Licht and bass player Tim Luntzel—Ranaldo has also invited on this twelfth solo album the singer Sharon Van Etten, Kid Millions aka Man Forever and Nels Cline, the guitarist from Wilco. Rather different from the noisy recording of his previous band, Electric Tim highlights in particular his love of a certain rock classicism ranging from Neil Young to Lou Reed, and including the Beatles and R.E.M. Since it’s Lee Ranaldo, the classicism is obviously relative. And the New-Yorker didn’t forget to remind us what kind of guitarist he was, a virtuoso more committed to sound textures than stupid pyrotechnics. © CM/Qobuz
