The raspy croon of Polish pop star Edyta Bartosiewicz gets its first American showcase on Dzis Sa Moje Urodziny, the compilation put together by Universal Music. This combines her experiments with alternative rock ("XXI Wiek," "Szal"), her English-language crossover attempts ("Have to Carry On"), and her Polish pop/rock ("Tatuez," "Ostatni"). Nothing here is that great; she is obviously a talented singer but these arrangements are rather bland and uninspiring. The only songs that really impress are the tracks driven by hard guitar; these seem to have a fire to them that the other songs are completely devoid of. Her voice is the one constant; she puts a fractured twist into her vocals that compliments her efforts greatly. This is a good place to discover Polish pop music for the first time, but be warned that this is not the most exciting album and it may be a big disappointment to first-time listeners.
