In 2003, Dizzee Rascal, the English prodigy, became a prophet of grime with his album Boy In Da Corner, the early stages of a sonoric tidal wave. It's difficult to stay relevant in a genre that has been largely revamped in the meantime, notably by Rascal himself. Yet with Don't Take It Personal, Dizzee Rascal's zeal is almost entirely in-tact, making use of a great range of British electronic music styles, chock-full of unbridled vocals and without slowing down the rhythm. The emphasis is largely on the bass, but the musician also dips into his Nigerian roots on the track "Roll Wit Me," as well as into UK drill and Atlanta trap, proving himself to be extremely convincing in this field that's otherwise a bit played-out, relying on storytelling, and the ability to deliver a clear, transparent message, without being afraid to make a statement. In the genre, this isn't a given. Don't Take It Personal is a well thought-out album that evidently took time to compose. Dizzee Rascal builds a bridge between his past and present, but it's not a revival or overly nostalgic. It's an album rooted in 2024 and in his artistic personality, whose challenging balance will keep you in suspense. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
