De Amerikaanse muzikant Prince leverde tijdens zijn leven in moordend tempo albums af. Daardoor hadden niet alle platen hetzelfde hoge niveau. Zo was Graffiti Bridge (1990) een beetje een tegenvaller. Maar de opvolger Diamonds and Pearls (1991) mag daarentegen weer tot de hoogtepunten uit het oeuvre van Prince gerekend worden. Geïnspireerd door groepen als NWA, Public Enemy en Tribe Called Quest kiest Prince Rogers Nelson ervoor om een flinke scheut hiphop aan de nummers toe te voegen. En natuurlijk ontbreken de sexy nummers ook niet op dit album, met songs als "Cream" en "Gett Off" die weinig aan de verbeelding over laten.
