On sale -30%Let’s give thanks to the excellent Bavarian Radio Choir (Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks) and its conductor, the Londoner Howard Arman, for this fine album of French choral music devoted to Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and Reynaldo Hahn's very rare Études latines, supported by a few other melodies by both composers.
Howard Arman used both Debussy's piano reduction and his original orchestration as the basis for this two-piano version of La Damoiselle élue, in which both instruments accompany the choir. This cantata was the young Debussy’s first success. Other melodies are sung here by the famous soprano Christiane Karg, who is very comfortable in this repertoire and with French pronunciation.
Reynaldo Hahn resurrects a dreamy Antiquity in his Études latines with texts by Leconte de Lisle, a cycle composed in 1900 all marked by a serious and tender appeal. Curiously, Hahn entrusts this collection of ten melodies alternately to a choir and soloists. The romantic qualms run through this cycle in a particularly subtle and refined manner. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Let’s give thanks to the excellent Bavarian Radio Choir (Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks) and its conductor, the Londoner Howard Arman, for this fine album of French choral music devoted to Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and Reynaldo Hahn's very rare Études latines, supported by a few other melodies by both composers.
