This 1981 performance of Bluebeard's Castle, featuring Sylvia Sass, Kolos Kovats, and Georg Solti, leading the London Philharmonic Orchestra, is available in two formats, as an audio CD and as a DVD, in a production by Hungarian director Miklós Szinetár. Opera is meant to be seen, not just heard, but in this case, the mediocrity of the elaborate sets, the turgid and emotionally empty direction, and Kovats' extremely limited acting ability actually diminish the impact of the performance, so the CD offers a far more compelling account of the opera than the DVD. Kovats has an ideal voice for Bluebeard -- dark, rich, and loamy -- and he sings with idiomatic ease. His singing is nuanced and probing, and reveals a character who genuinely cares for Judith, who wants to spare her from the dismal fate she seems determined to carve out for herself. Sass is a lively and convincingly strong-willed Judith, and she sings with passion and transparent emotion. She has at her disposal an impressive array of vocal colors, which is excellent for conveying Judith's impetuosity, but her upper register has a hardness and edge that aren't ideal for the character. Solti's outstanding performance of the score with the London Philharmonic Orchestra is the strongest reason to consider this version. Solti, who briefly studied with Bartók, obviously has a powerful feeling for the opera and is particularly successful at bringing out its folk elements. His conducting has real power, and the final scene makes an overwhelming impact. Decca's sound is clean, atmospheric, and full-bodied.
