The Choir of Bath Abbey

The Choir of Bath Abbey comprises groups of boys, girls, men, and smaller children, who perform separately and together. In addition to fulfilling liturgical functions at Bath Abbey, the choir has toured other cathedrals, broadcast on the BBC, and made recordings. Music at Bath Abbey, officially the Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, dates back at least to the first mention of an organ at the church in 1634 and probably further; the Abbey is one of Britain's oldest churches, having been founded in the seventh century. The modern history of the choir dates to the directorship of Peter King, who assumed the post in 1986. He remained director until 2016; after a short period with Sean Bowers as interim director, Huw Williams assumed the director's post and remained in the position as of the early 2020s. The choir comprises groups of boys (eight years old and up), girls (ages 11 to 18), men, and smaller children who are six to 11 years old and known as the Melody Makers. The first three of these perform at Sunday services at the Abbey; the Men's Choir performs at morning and afternoon services and in alternation with the Boys' and Girls' Choirs, who themselves alternate. The choir began to record frequently in the 2000s decade, issuing four volumes in a series entitled Music for an Abbey's Year. The choir's makeup is more diverse than that of most other large English churches. The Men's Choir includes not only local singers from the Bath area but also choral scholars from two local universities. There is no choir school at the Abbey, so the children's choirs are drawn from area schools. In addition to its liturgical functions, the choir has toured cathedrals around Britain and continental Europe and sung in the Choral Evensong service broadcast on the BBC Radio 3 network and the BBC One 2015 Christmas service. It also performed with The Three Tenors at an English event. The Choir of Bath Abbey has continued to record, moving to the Regent label in 2015 for the album Hymns from Bath Abbey. The choir issued the album Caritas: Music of Love, Hope, Charity and Consolation on Regent in 2022.
