Nicholas Gunn

Producer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and Blue Dot Music label owner Nicholas Gunn's atmospheric instrumental compositions combine earthy and ambient electronic textures. He reached the Top Ten of Billboard's New Age Albums chart for the first time with his second album, 1994's The Sacred Fire. Traversing world influences from the American Southwest to Latin music and more, he became a mainstay on the new age charts, including Top Ten albums such as 1995's The Music of the Grand Canyon (which charted for 55 weeks), 2007's Encanto (with guitarist Johannes Linstead), and 2012's Thirty-One Nights. In 2012, he also produced a cover of Sonique's trance hit "It Feels So Good" for (We Are) Nexus that became a Top 20 dance hit in 2013. His contributions to the Under the Influence of Music series in the mid-2010s were collected on Under the Influence of Music, the Complete Series in 2016, and after producing a series of remixes for the dance sector under the Limelght banner, Gunn delivered his 21st studio album, Sound Condition, in 2021. Some of his subsequent work included trance collaborations with the likes of York and Sam Martin ("Higher") and Armin van Buuren and Aly & Fila (penning "For All Time"). Born in Rochester, England, Gunn began studying music at the Royal Academy of Music at age seven and continued until his family relocated to Los Angeles about four years later. Once there, he took classical flute lessons, later joining his schools' wind ensembles. He briefly shifted focus from music to acting after finishing high school, leading to some guest spots on television. Gunn soon re-dedicated himself in music, however, learning recording techniques while forging his own sound and compositional style. He eventually self-released his first album, Afternoon in Sedona, in 1993. The record's Southwestern flair turned up again on 1994's The Sacred Fire. Issued on the Real Music label, it went as high as number ten on the New Age Albums chart. He repeated the feat with the next year's The Music of the Grand Canyon, and peaked at number 11 with 1996's Crossroads, which incorporated Latin influences. Passion in My Heart followed in 1998 before Gunn made Return to Grand Canyon in 1999. He then released The Great Southwest on his own Anagram Records label in 2001 before switching stylistic gears a year later on Through the Great Smoky Mountains: A Musical Journey. Having quickly shuttered Anagram, that release arrived on Gunn's newly established Gemini Sun Records. His first Christmas album, A Christmas Classic, appeared on Gemini Sun in 2002 and was followed by the next year's Journey to Yellowstone. Both 2004's Breathe and 2006's Beyond Grand Canyon were also issued on Gemini Sun. Gunn teamed up with guitarist Johannes Linstead for his next long-player, Encanto. Released by Spring Hill Music in 2007, it returned Gunn to the Top Ten of the new age chart. He remained with Spring Hill for 2012's Thirty-One Nights, another Top Ten success. Electro-pop outfit (We Are) Nexus released the Gunn-produced single "It Feels So Good" in 2013, and it reached number 14 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. That same year, Spring Hill put out the Gunn collection Twenty Years of Discovery. Over the next few years, Gunn concentrated on single-track releases with the Under the Influence of Music series. These songs were collected on Under the Influence of Music, the Complete Series in 2016. The location-minded "Ibiza Sunset" and "Saint Lucia" followed in 2017 and later appeared on the full-length Riding the Thermals (Blue Dot Studios) in 2019. It featured vocals by Alina Renae on select tracks. In the meantime, Gunn began releasing remixes for the Armada Music and Raz Nitzan Music labels under the moniker Limelght. The water-themed Nicholas Gunn album Pacific Blue was issued on Blue Dot in 2020, with Sound Condition arriving in 2021. As Blue Dot expanded, Gunn maintained a vigorous recording schedule, issuing such popular collaborative singles as 2021's "Higher" with York featuring Sam Martin, "California" featuring Chris Howard, and "Sensing You" with AVIRA, each notching streaming numbers in the multi-millions. "For All Time," a writing collaboration with track performers Armin van Buuren and Aly & Fila, won A State of Trance Tune of the Year in radio. A prolific 2022 included Gunn collaborations like "Wild Child" featuring RAEYA, "Love You More" with Dave Neven, and "Wings" with Protoculture featuring Alina Renae, just to name a few.
