Matteo Mela
Matteo Mela is among Italy's most active guitarists, especially visible as one-half of SoloDuo. He has a substantial recording catalog and is also an educator.
Mela was born in Imperia in northern Italy in 1971. He studied the guitar there with Renzo Doria Miglietta. He earned a musicology degree in the city of Cremona, and while there, he met guitarist Giovanni Puddu and continued his studies with him. He also took master classes with various guitarists, including Angelo Gilardino, Alirio Diaz, and Brazil's Assad Brothers. Mela went on for chamber music classes at the Accademia Pianistica di Imola, studying with pianists Dario De Rosa, Alexander Lonquich, and Pier Narciso Masi. While a student, he formed the Mela/Bandini Duo with guitarist Giampaolo Bandini. The duo won a variety of prizes at chamber music competitions between 1991 and 1998.
In 2002, Mela and Lorenzo Micheli formed SoloDuo, which was still active as of the early 2020s. Mela made his recording debut in 2004 with Micheli, violinist Ivan Rabaglia, and cellist Enrico Bronzi, issuing an album of quartets by François de Fossa on the Stradivarius label. The pair returned two years later on Stradivarius with Rabaglia, bandoneonist Per Arne Glorvigen, and I Solisti di Parma on a recording of Piazzolla's music for guitar. With SoloDuo, Mela has appeared at such major venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Konzerthaus in Berlin, and Sejong Chamber Hall in Seoul. The duo's repertory is large, stretching from the Classical era to contemporary times, and they also perform Baroque works for guitar or theorbo with lutenist Massimo Lonardi. In addition to Stradivarius, the duo has recorded for Naxos, Solaria, and Aparte, among other labels, issuing the album Souvenir d'Espagne on the latter in 2023. Mela lives in Geneva, Switzerland, where he is on the faculty at the Conservatoire Populaire de Musique.
