Libianca's yearning, nuanced vocal delivery, vulnerable lyrics, and Afrobeat-inflected production met with international chart success. After competing on NBC's The Voice in 2021, she had her breakout hit with "People," a song inspired by struggles with depression that went as high as number two in the U.K., the Netherlands, and New Zealand and charted around the world in 2023. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the early 2000s, Libianca Kenzonkinboum Fonji relocated with her family to Bamenda, Cameroon when she was four. A singer essentially all her life, she started writing songs at boarding school as a preteen and went on to practice her skills in choirs and at open mikes. She moved back to the States in her teens and eventually competed on the 21st season of NBC singing competition The Voice in 2021. With Blake Shelton as her coach, she made it into the final 20 with bluesy updates of songs including SZA's "Good Days," Doja Cat's "Woman," and Billie Eilish's "Everything I Wanted" before being eliminated. The appearance landed her a record deal with 5K Records and Sony. In December 2022, Libianca made her major-label debut with "People" -- aka "People (Check on Me)" -- which was inspired by her own experiences with depression and cyclothymia. Its midtempo melancholy and frothing African percussion connected with audiences worldwide, and the song rose to number two on the official charts in the U.K., Ireland, New Zealand, and the Netherlands while charting on continents including Africa, Asia, and North America; it peaked at number 89 on the U.S. Hot 100. Social media and numerous remixes helped drive the popularity of the song, including versions by artists as diverse as Ayra Starr and Omah Lay, Cian Ducrot, and Becky G. Libianca joined Alicia Keys on tour in mid-2023.
