Danielle Nicole
Danielle Nicole is a contemporary blues singer, songwriter, and bass player with a voice that has drawn comparisons to artists like Susan Tedeschi and Bonnie Raitt. She first began collecting music awards in the blues sector as a member of the sibling act Trampled Under Foot with her brothers. Nicole launched her solo career with 2015's Wolf Den, then had a critical breakthrough with her next album, 2018's Grammy-nominated Cry No More. She had collected five career Blues Music Awards for her bass playing alone by the arrival of her third solo LP, 2024's The Love You Bleed.
Raised in a musical family that included her blues musician father, Bob Schnebelen, in Kansas City, Missouri, Danielle Nicole Schnebelen began her music career in her early teens, singing at local coffee houses and open mikes. In 2000, while active in various other Kansas City-area bands, she and her brothers, Nick and Kris Schnebelen, formed the soul-blues band Trampled Under Foot. The group went on to release a self-titled album in 2006, followed by 2008's May I Be Excused, 2011's Wrong Side of Blues, and two live records before 2013's Badlands won Contemporary Blues Album of the Year at the 2014 Blues Music Awards; Danielle Nicole took home the award for Best Instrumentalist: Bass.
After signing with Concord Music Group as a soloist, she released an eponymous debut EP in March 2015. It featured keyboardist Mike "Shinetop" Sedovic, musician/producer Anders Osborne, and drummer Stanton Moore of Galactic. Her first solo full-length, the New Orleans-recorded, soul-bluesy Wolf Den, followed later that year with the same core band. Nicole sold the live album Live at the Gospel Lounge while on tour in 2017. A second studio album, Cry No More, arrived in February 2018 and led to Blues Music Awards in the categories of Contemporary Blues Female Artist and Instrumentalist: Bass as well as her first Grammy nomination (Best Contemporary Blues Album). She went on to claim the bass award in 2021, 2022, and 2023 as well.
Danielle Nicole left Concord for Forty Below Records before returning in late 2023 with "Make Love," her first new solo recording in five years. It served as the lead single for her third full-length, January 2024's The Love You Bleed. Recorded with the quartet of Brandon Miller (guitars and mandolin), Damon Parker (keyboards), GoGo Ray (drums), and Stevie Blacke (violin and cello), it was produced by Tony Braunagel (Taj Mahal, Eric Burdon), with Nicole serving as co-producer.
