Célia Oneto Bensaid
France's Célia Oneto Bensaid is a highly regarded young pianist, a versatile figure active as a solo player, chamber musician, and vocal accompanist. She amassed a substantial recording catalog before reaching age 30.
Bensaid was born in Paris on September 19, 1992. She grew up in an artistic family oriented toward drama but chose a musical career instead and took up the piano at age six. After lessons at a regional conservatory, Bensaid was admitted by a unanimous vote to the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Paris (CRR). There, she earned five diplomas, with top honors in all of them: in piano with Claire Désert, three separate accompaniment programs with Erika Guiomar, Anne Le Bozec, and Jean-Frédéric Neuburger, and chamber music with Désert and Ami Flammer. She continued her studies with René Shereshevskaya and at the Ecole Normale Alfred Cortot, where she earned a diploma in 2018. Bensaid also took master classes with Anne Queffelec, Maria João Pires, and Jean-Claude Pennetier. She won an unusually large variety of prizes, beginning with a first prize and the public prize at the 2012 Concours International Claude Bonneton. The André Boisseaux Prize allowed her to record her first solo album, American Touches (2018), which featured music by Gershwin and Bernstein.
As a soloist, Bensaid has appeared at such major venues as the Philharmonie de Paris, the Festival La Roque d'Anthéron, the Grand Theater of Harbin (China), and Salamanca Hall in Japan. In addition to East Asia, she has appeared in Russia, Europe, Algeria, and the U.S. Bensaid has often accompanied mezzo-soprano Fiona McGown, and she is an enthusiastic chamber music player who is the dedicatee of several works by composer Camille Pépin. Those appeared on a well-regarded 2019 album on the NoMad label. During the 2019-2020 season, Bensaid made debuts at Bourgie Hall in Montreal and at Wigmore Hall in London. She was heard on the multi-volume album Charlotte Sohy: Compositrice de la Belle Epoque in 2022.
